Tutorial Six:  The internet and online communities

In a school environment, you would find children if different conditions. Like Autism, Dyspraxia or ADHD, just to name a few. These children need different leaning environment to gain the most from their education.

I think the sites are available to help education people about the condition, and how they are not alone. Whether it is a son/daughter, mother/father, family member with the condition. The originations are there to help everyone, not matter what the situation.

I think occupational transition is rather a unknown experience for a lot of people at the beginning of finding out about the condition. How are they going to carry on? What are they going to change? What am I going to have to do? etc with a lot of other questions rolling around in their brain. The website are good, because then those who are really to look will, and gain understanding to move forward, if that’s what they want to do. Whether others want to go anywhere near it. But that is up to the individual and how they want to get through, at the time.

Tutorial Eight:  Assistive technology

A Tactile button can be different sizes, shapes, colour and uses for different reasons. You could have a client who loves buttons because of the way it reacts, for example it might vibrate, change colour, sing a song/play a tune, and that is what engages the client to use/interact with the equipment. So what Dave come and talked to use about assistive technology, he brought a lot of buttons to demonstrate what different client like, work with. The one I found the most impressive was, having a button, whatever you want, but it gets connected into a power multi pin box. Where you then plug in a appliance and you can then operate that appliance via the button. I was so surprised and amazed at the same time.
Example of some assistive technology is seen on Tutorial Five

Tutorial One:  Information Technology and Ethical Issues

From reading techterms.com Information technology is also known as ‘I.T.’ which “refers to anything related to computing technology, such as networking, hardware, software, the internet, or the people that work with these technologies” (techterm.com, 2012). From reading this quote I have gained a better understanding of what IT means, and how it is not the same as ICT, which I did. Now I will think about the people involved with computers, the programmes that are within a computer, and who designed them.

From reading techterms.com Information and Communication Technologies, which is also known as “‘ICT’ which refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. It is similar to information technology (IT), but focuses primarily on communication technologies. This includes the internet, wireless networks, cell phones, and other communication mediums” (techterm.com, 2012).. From reading this quote I understand ICT to be the nuts and bolts to computers. How things work, with computers and the different ways people use technology. From now on, I will now think about the hardware of a computer, the software that you have to download or any other device that people of today’s world use to communication with others.

I’m not comfortable with IT, I don’t trust it, as things can change at the drop at a hat, and it will fail on you, loss documents. Everything you have worked on, has gone.
The only way I will trust the computer is if someone else who knows more, and is willing to do the things I can’t because of fear to destroy things more.

On my first placement which was a hospital based community setting, the occupational therapist got me to use the equipment system which you input data, such as uses and return of equipment into a computer database/website.

My second placement working at Brockville primary school used computers to extend the children know, if they had finished the class work fast.
Issues of the computer game, was fighting between children, like who was allow to use the computer/play the games, and when.
  • What issues exist around OTs adoption of IT systems and tools?
  • What are some of the ways you can envisage IT use becoming a potential tool of practice. You should provide your own comments here as well as linking to examples of OT using IT in practice.  This can be done by hyper linking to blogs, internet sites, You Tube videos, podcasts etc
  • In your own words briefly critique why (or why not) a great understanding and use of IT will help us in our practice and daily lives if our goal is to enable occupation.

The ethical implication that is around me at the moment is frapping. Frapping is where a friend (maybe)/ person goes on your computer, and posts a message to your face book page. This could be anything from ‘I love boobs’ for a girl too ’10 likes and I’ll run through uni in my birthday suit’. I believe this to be ethical because the friend is going onto someone else’s personal page. There could be anything said/sent to people in their personal messages that they could read. I don’t really think It’s right to do/personal space/privacy.

Tutorial Two:  Occupational Engagement, Doing, Being, Becoming and Belonging.

So the occupation and relevance to fieldwork placement is school. For my second placement I was placed at Brockville Primary School in Dunedin.
I picked this as my topic as it’s something that everybody can relate to, or remember times/memories from their school days. Within my times in room three, I was involved in supporting the children with the different tacks that they have to done. Such as; news, writing maths, gym, reading and an activity that myself and another class mate run, which was face relation. I enjoyed my time at Brockville primary working with the children with the different activities that I did with them, along with helping the teacher with anything that needed to be done.
Doing, being in the moment, partaking in at activity/task that has been asked of you “purposeful, goal orientated activities” (week two – digital imaging). This is shown in my power point on part 2, slide number 3.
Being, you are their doing; the job, activity etc. You are involved in something take captures your attention, emotions or feelings. This is shown in my power point on part 1, slide number 7.
Becoming, the wish for the future, “who or what we wish to become” (week two – digital imaging). This is shown in my power point on part 2, slide number 10.
Belonging, where you sit in society, you group of friends, or even family. It’s were you feel most happy, safe, ‘at home’/at peace with yourself and the world. This is shown in my power point on part 1, slide number 8&9 and on part 2, slide number 4-7.
The ethical considerations I took on board, when finding these pictures where; talking with the teachers and principle of the School, to find out if I could take some photos. I know that some of the children at the school were not allow having pictures taken of them, so I found pictures of the children at the school, on the internet. I references the photo’s I have used from the internet.
