Tutorial One:  Information Technology and Ethical Issues

From reading techterms.com Information technology is also known as ‘I.T.’ which “refers to anything related to computing technology, such as networking, hardware, software, the internet, or the people that work with these technologies” (techterm.com, 2012). From reading this quote I have gained a better understanding of what IT means, and how it is not the same as ICT, which I did. Now I will think about the people involved with computers, the programmes that are within a computer, and who designed them.

From reading techterms.com Information and Communication Technologies, which is also known as “‘ICT’ which refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. It is similar to information technology (IT), but focuses primarily on communication technologies. This includes the internet, wireless networks, cell phones, and other communication mediums” (techterm.com, 2012).. From reading this quote I understand ICT to be the nuts and bolts to computers. How things work, with computers and the different ways people use technology. From now on, I will now think about the hardware of a computer, the software that you have to download or any other device that people of today’s world use to communication with others.

I’m not comfortable with IT, I don’t trust it, as things can change at the drop at a hat, and it will fail on you, loss documents. Everything you have worked on, has gone.
The only way I will trust the computer is if someone else who knows more, and is willing to do the things I can’t because of fear to destroy things more.

On my first placement which was a hospital based community setting, the occupational therapist got me to use the equipment system which you input data, such as uses and return of equipment into a computer database/website.

My second placement working at Brockville primary school used computers to extend the children know, if they had finished the class work fast.
Issues of the computer game, was fighting between children, like who was allow to use the computer/play the games, and when.
  • What issues exist around OTs adoption of IT systems and tools?
  • What are some of the ways you can envisage IT use becoming a potential tool of practice. You should provide your own comments here as well as linking to examples of OT using IT in practice.  This can be done by hyper linking to blogs, internet sites, You Tube videos, podcasts etc
  • In your own words briefly critique why (or why not) a great understanding and use of IT will help us in our practice and daily lives if our goal is to enable occupation.

The ethical implication that is around me at the moment is frapping. Frapping is where a friend (maybe)/ person goes on your computer, and posts a message to your face book page. This could be anything from ‘I love boobs’ for a girl too ’10 likes and I’ll run through uni in my birthday suit’. I believe this to be ethical because the friend is going onto someone else’s personal page. There could be anything said/sent to people in their personal messages that they could read. I don’t really think It’s right to do/personal space/privacy.
